Protecting our Environment for Future Generations
Another element of the Holy Rosary Ethos is respect and care for the environment. Holy Rosary School joined Roots and Shoots in 2004 and also support the Blue Bag recycling programme.
Root and Shoots Programme
Roots and Shoots is an international service organisation founded in 1991 by well known conservationist, Jane Goodall. Roots and Shoots groups around the world are made up of caring children who want to make a difference in their communities, by helping people, animals and the environment.
At Holy Rosary our emphasis is on the environment and specifically recycling paper. Every Friday a certificate is awarded to the class which collects the most newspaper.
The Roots and Shoots model for success is compassion, knowledge and action. Roots and Shoots gives young people the chance to learn about issues in their communities (and the world) and even take action to bring about change.
Recycling Programme

The “Blue Bag Programme” teaches the girls the importance of recycling household refuse. The girls place their household recyclables into blue refuse bags and the bags are collected by Mama She’s Waste Recyclers. For a monthly fee and a once off admin fee, Mama She's provide a weekly collection service of mixed recyclables, as well as the allocation of 10 free blue bags per month.
The bags are then taken to the Material Recovery Facility. The recyclables are then separated into their different grades, baled and sent off to the various processors to produce new materials. For more information on this programme please contact the recylders directly at mike@wasterecyclers.co.za.
